Canon S95 Vs Panasonic LX5

!: Canon S95 Vs Panasonic LX5

Not every great photographer is using a digital SLR camera. There are some "close-to-pro" models that do not have interchangeable lenses. That does not mean you get sub-par quality. No, indeed.

In fact a couple of these "prosumer" cameras are quite unassuming in appearance, but they are extremely popular as "spare cameras" among pros and as primary cameras in the hands of great photographers who just don't want to be bothered with bulk and complexity.

The Canon PowerShot S95 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC LX5 are two of the most highly rated cameras on the market in the prosumer category.

Well, maybe I am getting ahead of the reviewers, because these two cameras have not been officially reviewed by the experts yet. They are too new. But both are upgrades of highly rated cameras, and they have retained the same features and benefits that got them that rating. The main difference in both models is the ability to take HD video.

Side-by-side the two cameras look fairly alike. The Canon is a bit smaller, but not by much. Both are 10MP sensor cameras with excellent lens quality. And both have a wide aperture of f/2.0, which, if you are not familiar with lens terminology, is excellent for get fast shutter speeds especially in low light conditions.

With respect to features that pros look for, they both have plenty of control settings that can be individually set so that the photographer can get the image she wants. In addition, they both have the ability to shoot in RAW mode, which lots of photographers prefer.

Differences that may sway you in one way or another:

The Canon S95 is less expensive by about . The Panasonic Lumix LX5 has a faster continuous shooting rate at 2.5 fps against 0.9 fps for the Canon. The one other benefit of the Panasonic is a wider exposure compensation with -3 to +3 vs only -2 to +2 for the S95.

One thing you cannot help but notice if you study the remarks of the experts is what high quality images both these models produce. High quality is what makes great photos.

Panasonic Lumix Zs3 - Point-And-Shoot at Its Best

!: Panasonic Lumix Zs3 - Point-And-Shoot at Its Best

I have a friend who was at his friend's house and happened to see a new camera lying on the kitchen counter. His friend let him test it out, and within an hour he was on the computer putting in his order at amazon.

Which camera? It was the Panasonic Lumix DMC ZS3, of course. I say, of course, because Panasonic a the leader in point and shoot cameras. If you do any research at all, you will see the Panasonic name coming up time and time again as the top digital point and shoot camera, no matter which category you are investigating.

In this case, the category most likely will be the vacation or travel category. However, this little camera is so versatile, it can fill the bill in almost any category. Its younger brother, the Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ5 was (and still is) a trail blazer in the vacation category.

Now, with the ZS3, you get bigger image size with 12.1 megapixels, and you get more range with 12x zoom. The wide end is quite good at 25mm. But then you can zoom up to 250mm on the long end. There is even an additional 2x optical zoom if you absolutely need it.

The ZS3 has also improved the video quality over the TZ5 so that now you can take HD video with STEREO sound. If you have the right kind of HD TV, you can just remove the camera storage disc and plug it into your TV for instant gratification.

One more thing, the LCD screen has been upgraded to 430,000 dots to make it even easier to view in tough light. All in all, the Panasonic Lumix DMC ZS3 is a camera that will bring a smile to your face and a lift in your step. Don't forget that a digital camera makes a great gift for Christmas. It is "the gift that keeps on giving".

Waterproof Digicam Comparison - Canon D10 Vs Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1

!: Waterproof Digicam Comparison - Canon D10 Vs Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1

Canon and Panasonic has announced their first shock and water-proof compact camera early this year. If you are still confused which camera is best for you, here you will find some useful information and comparison between the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 and Canon PowerShot D10.

Both the cameras are waterproof, but if you want a camera that can work around 10 meters underwater, then Powershot D10 would be your best shot. The submarine shaped D10 with its porthole-like screws and bulbous shell expresses that this digital camera is purely made for underwater. But on ground, you won't like its bulky form. D10 has easy-to-press buttons and a large LCD screen where icons are big and nice, you still can see it quite clear even underwater. Additionally, it contains bigger screw-mouths on every corner for mounting the camera in various underwater grips.

While other waterproof digicam, Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 can be used up to 3 meters only underwater with a completely different approach. The sleek rectangular slab outline has made it hard to distinguish from usual non-tough cams. Compare to Canon D10, the buttons are smaller and shooting modes can be selected by a thumb dial rather than a dedicated button. Even So, you will lose usability underwater with TS1, it will perform better on land and you must consider that.

Another big difference is that the Panasonic TS1 shoots in the AVCHD format at 720p, where D10 only does VGA videos of 640×480. But the video recording mode of TS1 is not the most polished one, there is a two to three seconds of delay from hitting the dedicated video button to starting and stopping the video and its quite unclear when exactly everything does start. If you are ok with that delay, you will surely love the outstanding HD video mode. Lumix DMC-TS1 is currently seeing a big bug when importing the taken video into iMovie. The featured AVCHD format of TS1 is quite annoying and you might require installing particular codec to import video into your preferred video editing software and then convert it into friendly formats.

Both toughcams are featuring 12-megapixel shooting and have the same CCD sensor size. But the ISO of TS1 goes up to 6400 when it is only 1600 for D10. A difference that really matters is the wider-angle lense of TS1, which is an effective focal length zoom of 28mm-128mm f/3.3-f/5.9, where D10 is only 35mm-105mm f/2.8-f/4.9. Color reproduction through the Leica lens of TS1 is far better than that of D10. Moreover, the TS1 lean to autofocus underwater with greater ease in comparison with D10.

Just In Case you are not a professional scuba photo shooter, the benefits of toughcams can also be figured when you are making your kid's bath time photos without worrying about getting your camera wet or shooting with unclean hands while you are in the middle of a barbecue, or anything like that. Whatever happens, you will always can wipe your digital camera clean from water. So the conclusion is, if you care about form factor, you should go with Panasonic Lumix TS1, Powershot D10 will be tough to fit it into a pants pocket without some serious bulging. But if you usually go deeper than 3 meters underwater, you should go with Canon D10.
